RR replaces RM on Getty’s new footage site

RR replaces RM on Getty's new footage siteIn keeping with their claim that licensing motion imagery represents a key area of future growth for the company, Getty has announced the launch of its new footage web-site.  The e-commerce enabled site will license footage under either the Rights-Ready (RR) or the RF methods, only, and will not offer Rights-Managed licensing. In addition, Getty seeks not only to generate revenue by licensing the footage, but also by offering a service to help clients manage the digital assets they license from the company.

All former Rights-Managed (RM) footage collections now fall under the RR method. The move to replace RM licensing with RR comes as part of the company’s effort to make licensing footage as quick and easy as possible.  Customers can purchase a RR license, which is good for ten years, on-line with no need for negotiating the fee by phone.  Getty has also streamlined the footage research and footage download procedures to make the footage licensing experience much simpler for clients.  According to a company spokesperson, the elimination of RM licensing in the footage division does not indicate a parallel move on the still images front.  RM licensing remains an important part of Getty’s still image licensing business.

Getty also offers assistance in managing the huge footage files with its Media Manager, a digital asset management service that allows customers to store all of their assets, including footage media files, in a centralized library.  The company does not split Media Manager revenue as a separate item in its financial reporting.  Nonetheless, Getty sees this as another growth area, citing general industry trends indicating growing demand digital archives management tools and services on the part of large and small organizations.

Apart from its own commercial footage collections from Photodisc and DigitalVision, Getty’s roster of footage brands includes AP Archive, ApexStock, Archive Films, dick clark productions, inc., Discovery FootageSource, Image Bank Film, Universal Studios and Warner Bros. Entertainment.
