PhotoShelter, technology provider to photographers, launches licensing business

PhotoShelter, the provider of on-line archiving and web-site services to over 16,000 photographers, has announced the opening of a photo licensing business called The PhotoShelter Collection. The company invites all interested photographers to submit images for consideration by its editing team. PhotoShelter gives photographers a 70% revenue share but, as an incentive to help build the collection, will offer 85% on images submitted by November 4, for the first six months of sales.
PhotoShelter has entered the stock photo licensing business by leveraging the very technology it has, up to now, provided to its photographer-clients; hosting their online archives, powering their ecommerce websites, and managing their photo businesses. The company promises to maintain pricing integrity in the face of low-priced alternatives and the proliferation of imagery from amateurs who do not recognize the value of their work. Nonetheless, PhotoShelter has openly invited amateurs to submit imagery.
"The rapid proliferation of high-quality digital cameras has made it easier than ever to produce stunning imagery. But photographers, whether pros or not, have been limited in their abilities to sell because the existing outlets are either too exclusive, artificially cap the image values, or have pay-to-play schemes," said Allen Murabayashi, CEO of PhotoShelter. "The PhotoShelter Collection is an open marketplace that embraces the ethos of the web, while maintaining the integrity of the professional photography industry."
Interested photographers are invited to fill out an application (at no charge) and submit images for PhotoShelter's team of commercial photo editors to review at PhotoShelter.com/collection.
