Photography for photography’s sake at FILE Magazine

FILE Magazine: bust © 2004 timothy archibaldI have listened with no small amount of envy to tales from the CEPIC Conference in Florence from colleagues who attended. By all accounts, the organization put on another excellent event with over 900 people in attendance. Most of my friends reported on the usual “speed-dating” meeting frenzy, which has left their heads spinning and their minds and bodies needing to unwind.  For those true fans of beautiful, thought-provoking photography, I have just the antidote to photo-business overload; a web-site dedicated to unique, unexpected and inspiring still imagery whose creators share the works of art they have discovered simply for the sake of sharing them: FILE magazine.

FILE Magazine: Endless Summer © John SellekaersA painter friend with no connection to the stock photo business recommended I check out FILE magazine.  According to the site’s About Us page, “The purpose of FILE is to collect and display photographs that treat subjects in unexpected ways. Alternate takes, odd angles, unconventional observations - these are some of the ways photographs collected in FILE reinterpret traditional genres. We leave the Kodak Moments to the family album, the glossy fashion spreads to Vogue, and the photo finishes to ESPN. Rather than taking the well-trod paths, we veer off to get a different perspective.”  The site’s creators accomplish that goal.

They go on to say what they are not: “FILE magazine is not a photoblog, photo challenge/contest, or group photo album. FILE does not publish tips on taking photographs or provide evaluations of photo hardware or software. There are are many other sites that handle these topics better than FILE ever could.”

The site is a labor of love for its founders (who do not reveal their full names on the web-site) who have day-jobs.FILE Magazine: dog show 2 photo © 2005 ann giordano "apatrick," according to the site, works as a photojournalist in Northern California, and "Beerzie Boy," as an Information Developer at a large technology company.  I encourage stock photo colleagues, photographers and anyone who appreciates photography as an art form, or anyone looking for a little visual inspiration, to take a break from their daily routine and check out the site.
