Getty Images and AFP renew partnership agreement
Getty Images, widely considered to be the world’s largest stock licensing company, has announced that it has renewed a deal with the global press agency, Agence France-Presse (AFP) allowing both companies to leverage the others archive. The renewed contract takes effect on 1st June 2009 and extends the partnership between the two companies for an additional three years from the initial agreement put into effect in 2003.

Fotolia appoints former iStockPhoto co-founder Patrick Lor as President for North America
Fotolia, a popular micro-payment stock photography site, has announced that it has hired of Patrick Lor, co-founder of iStockPhoto, as the company’s new President for North America. Lor has been tasked with overseeing North American operations for Fotolia, which currently has a presence in 10 countries worldwide. He will be working with co-founder and CEO Oleg Tscheltzoff on continued expansion strategies for the company, which has nearly 4 million monthly unique visitors (comScore), more than five million images available for license and more than 1 million members worldwide.

Framepool sponsors CLIO Awards
Framepool, a stock footage company founded by filmmakers with offices in Munich, London, Paris, New York, Chicago, Los Angeles and Miami, has announced that it is sponsoring this year’s CLIO Awards in Las Vegas. Masterfile’s Endless Media named as an Official Webby Honoree
The Webby Awards established in 1996 by The International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences, which includes such diverse members as Richard Branson, David Bowie, Matt Groening and Harvey Weinstein, as well as writers and editors from a large array of publications. WIPO selects ‘Promoting Green Innovation’ theme for 2009 World Intellectual Property Day
The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), a specialized agency of the United Nations, has announced the theme for its annual World Intellectual Property Day to be held on April 26 will be “promoting green innovation as a key element in meeting the challenges of climate change”. In his message to mark the day, WIPO Director General Francis Gurry highlights the contribution that a balanced intellectual property (IP) system can make in enabling the development of technology-based solutions to mitigate the impact of climate change.

Action Plus acquired by Portray Limited
Action Plus, as 30-year old sports image library, based in London, has been acquired by Portray Limited, a company wholly owned by industry veteran Stephen Hearn. For 30 years, Action Plus was owned and operated by Richard Francis, a well known and sought after car and motorbike event photographer. The library, mostly editorial with news/feature images covering over 300 different sporting events, now extends to over 1.3 million images and is currently represented by more than 20 photo agencies worldwide.

Canada Post selects Image from Alaska Stock to raise awareness about global warming
Alaska Stock Images, a specialty agency featuring photos from from Alaska and Antarctica, has announced that a polar bear image from its archive has been selected by Canada Post to be used as part of an international postal awareness campaign on the effects of global warming. The image of the lone polar bear swimming in melting sea ice in Bellot Strait near Resolute Bay was created by Alaska Stock photographer Amanda Byrd. “I am truly honored that my image of the polar bear has been chosen to be part of Canada Post’s commitment of global warming awareness, and I am excited that this stamp will be viewed in some 30 other countries,” remarked Amanda.

Blend Images, a photographer-owned producer and distributor of royalty-free (RF) and rights-managed (RM) content, has announced that it has launched an updated website, logo, and brand identity. The agency sought to emphasize its ethnically diverse collection of business and lifestyle imagery. The campaign and design were developed by New York agency Spil Creative, an integrated design firm with expertise in visual branding.

Kursiv celebrating 15 years of business
Kursiv, a swiss stock photography agency, has announced that it is celebrating its 15th anniversary. The business was launched in 1994 by Karsten Risseeuw as a software distributor with specialized products for designers. In 1997, Kursiv started selling royalty-free image CDs – at that time a new and promising concept, in times where internet was slow and rights managed imagery expensive. By 1998 a dozen collections were represented. “We have sent out over 100 different image catalogs to our customers in those years”, Karsten Risseeuw recalls.

A look at Alamy’s 4Q Numbers
With Getty going private and absorbing Jupiter Images, and Superstock having gone bankrupt, for the first time in over a decade, the stock photo industry is without a publicly traded company within its ranks. We can no longer rely on industry leader Getty’s SEC filings for indications of that company’s health, nor for hints at wider trends in the industry. We do still, however, have the quarterly reports from Alamy, reports unusually detailed for a privately held company. The Oxford, UK based Alamy provides a number of stats from which we can extrapolate trends both at Alamy itself and in the industry at large. Their 4Q, 2008 report adds even more detail about Alamy’s geographic sources of revenue, as the company has provided revenue figures for the three main currencies in which it operates, US$, Euros and British Sterling. Picturemaxx AG opens office in Vienna
Munich-based picturemaxx AG, a German company providing solutions for archiving, managing and marketing digital content, has announced that it is expanding with an office in Vienna Austria to serve customers in northern, central, eastern and southern Europe. “In Germany, we have achieved a penetration of just under 90% in the picture market“, explains Bernd Czichon, CEO at picturemaxx AG. “It therefore seems only logical that we make our product portfolio accessible to a wider customer base in the future.“

SuperStock/RGB Ventures taps PicScout to track copyright infringements
SuperStock, a stock photography business that was recently purchased by a consortium of RF suppliers called RGB Ventures hasrecently signed an agreement with PicScout to track and enforce copyright infringements. “We are pleased to renew our relationship with PicScout,” said Lanny Ziering, CEO, SuperStock. “We chose PicScout because of their technology leadership in image tracking. PicScout will help us, as a stock agency, promote the value of copyright ownership for the artists we represent.”
