The Coordination of European Picture Agencies Press Stock Heritage (CEPIC), was established in Berlin in 1993 as a European economic interest group (E.E.I.G) not for profit in accordance with the European Communities Regulation and registered in Paris in 1999. CEPIC has Observer Status at WIPO, the World Intellectual Property Organisation and is an Associate Member of I.P.T.C, the International Press Telecommunications Council. CEPIC represents over 1,000 picture sources (primarily stock licensing companies) in Europe with members from most different European countries. The organization hosts an annual trade even called “CEPIC Congress” in various European cities which is widely considered to be the biggest event of its kind in the world.

CEPIC to host 2nd annual meta data conference in Malta

Maltese Flag with meta dataAt last year’s CEPIC Conference in Florence, CEPIC added a special one-day conference dedicated specifically to the topic of metadata – descriptive and identifying text information that accompanies digital photographs—hosted in partnership with the International Press Telecommunications Council (IPTC) and the European news and media trade organization, IFRA.  Building on the success of last year’s metadata meeting, the thee organizations will hold a second meta-data conference in Malta on June 5, 2008, called “Metadata for Better Business.”

TopFoto partners with Bamber Gascoigne to create TimeSearch engineTopFoto, a stock photography library specializing in historical images, has launched a new way to search for images based on the date of actual events in history. The new search method called TimeSearch was devised by author and academic Bamber Gascoigne and designed by Ian Henghes; fellow directors of the educational website HistoryWorld. Bamber Gascoigne, perhaps best known as Chairman of University Challenge before handing the baton to Jeremy Paxman, says: “TimeSearch for picture researchers is an idea originating from discussions between Alan Smith of TopFoto and me at the CEPIC conference in Prague in 2005.”

BAPLA picture fair opens to non-member agencies

Picture Buyers' Fair 2007 at Business Design Centre, London - © Paul BrownThe British Association of Picture Libraries and Agencies (BAPLA) will host its seventh annual Picture Buyers Fair (PBF) at London’s Business Design Centre on May 7 and 8.  In a change of policy that promises to enhance the variety of suppliers at the fair, the trade organization has invited any and all picture agencies to exhibit at the show, rather than restrict participation to BAPLA member agencies, only, as they have in the past.

IPTC and Ifra photo metadata conference tacked onto CEPIC

Michelangelo's David with keywordsTwo of the most influential trade organizations in the European media, IPTC and Ifra, have organized the first international conference focused specifically on the topic of photo metadata. The event will take place in Florence, Italy on Thursday, June 7 of this year and will coincide with the annual CEPIC conference of picture archive companies. Adobe Systems, Inc. will sponsor the one-day conference.

October meeting of photo industry associations considered a success

Photo industry associations discuss the meaning of life and some photography stuff!Last month we reported about the planned meeting of representatives from eighteen photo industry trade associations to address issues of common interest and set plans for collective action on such issues as licensing and technical standards and so-called “orphan works” legislation in the US. The meeting took place as scheduled in New York City on October 31 and was deemed a huge success by all who attended. The leadership of ASPP and PACA initiated this historic meeting, which was hosted by the Society of Illustrators.

Photo industry associations to collaborate

photo_industry_associations_meetThe Picture Archive Council of America (PACA) and the American Society of Photography Professionals (ASPP) will bring together an international group of leading trade associations and organizations representing various participants in the stock photo industry, from individual photographers to stock photo companies, to meet in New York City on October 31, 2006, to discuss topics of common interest and establish plans for collective action. This marks the first time such an extensive list of photo business-related trade organizations (see below) have met to coordinate their efforts on behalf of their respective memberships.
