Alamy releases quarterly figures

Alamy has released detailed information about the numbers of images added to its collection, the percentage break-downs between RF and RM revenue and images sold, and the average pricing information for the two licensing models.  The company made public figures from the first half of 2004 to the first quarter of 2006.  In several cases the numbers reveal surprising trends, at least for Alamy, if not for the industry in general.  Highlights of these numbers include the following:

Alamy has grown to 4 Million images

Alamys_collection_growsAlamy has proudly announced that its image collection has grown to more than 4 million images. Alamy’s collection is made up of both Rights-Managed (RM) and Royalty-Free (RF) images from more than 5500 photographers and 340 agencies from around the world. Alamy claims to have uploaded an average of 200,000 images a month with more than 2 million images in 2005. The rapid growth can likely be attributed to Alamy’s great reputation among artists including Alamy’s use of technology to provide artists with access to real-time sales data. Alamy now storing images in New York City

Alamy_new_york_times_squareAlamy has announced plans to begin storing images in various locations around the US. Starting in December a copy of the entire 3.8 million image catalog will begin serving North American customers from New York City. This move has been implemented in order to shave precious seconds off the time required to return search results. The time to return search results is expected to be half of the time of results served from Alamy’s main office in London.
