Obituary: Jane Kinne, friend
The photography community mourns the loss of Jane Kinne, who passed away early Saturday morning. Mrs. Kinne spent over fifty years as a photo agent, consultant to photographers and agencies, and an expert on copyright and other legal issues concerning images and image reproduction. Along the way, she brought her boundless and positive energy to bear on the creation and management of several photo industry trade associations. Most importantly, as a good friend and mentor, she gently but firmly coaxed from those of us lucky enough to know and work with her, an eagerness to bring our own positive energy to the business at hand.
The following information about Jane Kinne comes from her biography as it appeared on the web-site of the Society of American Archivists, one of the many organizations she served:
In her more than 50 years as a photo agent and consultant Jane Kinne has helped to shape professional standards for the use of images. She is recognized as one of the country’s leading experts in copyright issues, image-reproduction rights and media law, and has testified in more than 125 copyright cases. Ms. Kinne served on the Working Committee for Fair Use and the new Technologies for the US Copyright Office.
She has served as agent and advisor for nearly 2,000 photographers over her career and is widely known as the foremost advocate of photographers’ rights.
She was vice-President of Comstock, Inc, and President of Photo Researchers, Inc, as well as Director of Photo and Film at the National Audubon Society. She has received Lifetime Achievement Awards from the Society of Picture Professionals (ASPP) the North American Nature Photography Association (NANPA) and the Picture Archive Council of America (PACA).
Jane Kinne died on November 3, 2007, after suffering complications during heart surgery a month earlier.

Jane Kinne was also a co-founder and member of the board of directors of the PLUS Coalition. Her guidance and support for our initiative has helped us immensely. We will miss her experienced counsel and gracious wit.
A toast to her memory will be appropriate for a long time to come.

Its a sad time for the stock industry and numerous photographers that have worked with Jane in her tireless efforts to advocate photographers rights. She was also one of the founders of NANPA which has helped many young people get their start in nature photography. She was perhaps the single most important figure that has helped shape my career. Jane will be missed.
