BAPLA picture fair opens to non-member agencies

Picture Buyers' Fair 2007 at Business Design Centre, London - © Paul BrownThe British Association of Picture Libraries and Agencies (BAPLA) will host its seventh annual Picture Buyers Fair (PBF) at London’s Business Design Centre on May 7 and 8.  In a change of policy that promises to enhance the variety of suppliers at the fair, the trade organization has invited any and all picture agencies to exhibit at the show, rather than restrict participation to BAPLA member agencies, only, as they have in the past.

BAPLA honors Mary Evans with Lifetime Achievement Award

Mary Evans, a pioneer in stock licensing, is the co-founder (with her husband Hilary), of The Mary Evans Picture Library and is also a founding member of BAPLA in 1975.

London and Chicago: Image supplier trade shows coming your way this spring!

BAPLA Picture Buyers Fair in London on May 9-10

Picturehouse Chicago on April 12thPictureHouse will hold its second annual picture buyers event in Chicago on April 12, beginning at noon.  The event met with great success last year, when it coincided with the Annual Meeting of the Picture Archive Council of America (PACA,) also held in Chicago.  This year, PictureHouse takes place on the same day as, and directly across the street from, the Annual Conference of the American Society of Picture Professionals (ASPP.)  Chicago area picture buyers should consider attending both events.  The ASPP Conference, a morning event, offers panel discussions on digital image standards and “the changing image of the picture licensing business.”  The PictureHouse trade show never disappoints in providing image buyers with a chance to meet new and old image suppliers and see the wide range of image sources available to them.

October meeting of photo industry associations considered a success

Photo industry associations discuss the meaning of life and some photography stuff!Last month we reported about the planned meeting of representatives from eighteen photo industry trade associations to address issues of common interest and set plans for collective action on such issues as licensing and technical standards and so-called “orphan works” legislation in the US. The meeting took place as scheduled in New York City on October 31 and was deemed a huge success by all who attended. The leadership of ASPP and PACA initiated this historic meeting, which was hosted by the Society of Illustrators.

BAPLA launches quarterly online magazine for art-buyers

Bapla Credit Magazine For Art BuyersThe British Association of Picture Libraries and Agencies (BAPLA) has posted the first issue of its new quarterly publication, Credit, which they call the "Ezine for image buyers."  The publication will feature articles on legal and other issues of concern to the stock photo community written from both image library and image buyer perspectives.  According to the trade organization's press release about the on-line magazine, "This is image buyers’ opportunity to voice their opinions about the industry, to the industry."  BAPLA will distribute the magazine to 11,000 art-buyers.

Stock photography industry experts to lead international marketing seminar

International Marketing and Tips on Going Global ChalkboardIndustry veterans Christina Vaughan, and Colin Finlay are conducting a seminar on international marketing for photo libraries at the upcoming BAPLA AGM, being held at Sadler’s Wells Theatre, London on October 10th. The seminar was prompted by a recent BAPLA survey where 77% of members said exporting would be a major priority in the next five years. This seminar, entitled “International Marketing and Tips on Going Global”, will discuss the stages involved in sourcing and building international relationships, and working with international agreements.

Photo industry associations to collaborate

photo_industry_associations_meetThe Picture Archive Council of America (PACA) and the American Society of Photography Professionals (ASPP) will bring together an international group of leading trade associations and organizations representing various participants in the stock photo industry, from individual photographers to stock photo companies, to meet in New York City on October 31, 2006, to discuss topics of common interest and establish plans for collective action. This marks the first time such an extensive list of photo business-related trade organizations (see below) have met to coordinate their efforts on behalf of their respective memberships.

BAPLA Picture Buyers Fair 2007 outpacing expectations

BAPLA, the British trade association for the stock photo industry, has released the list of 77 stock photo companies who reserved stands at the trade association's 2007 Picture Buyer's Fair.  According to BAPLA's Chief Executive Officer, Linda Royles, this represents a record pace for reservations for the fair, having booked over 50% of the available stands within two weeks of going on sale. The annual Fair, which will take place next year on May 9 and 10, at the Business Design Center in London, established to give picture buyers and suppliers the opportunity to meet face-to-face, has grown steadily each year.
