Getty to represent Bob Thomas Sports Photography and Popperfoto

© Getty Images - American War correspondent and photographer Peggy Diggens using her camera while wearing a military uniform September 1943, PopperfotoGetty Images, London, has announced the addition to its offerings of the historical image archive Popperfoto which includes the Bob Thomas Sports Photography collection.  Bob Thomas, himself, owns Popperfoto which he has, up to now, marketed through various distribution partners world-wide from their offices in a small village outside of London.

Getty has already added 10,000 Popperfoto images to its on-line database, and will represent the entirely of the 14MM strong archive exclusively.  The archives includes such notable iconic imagery as Captain Scott’s 1910-1912 Antarctic Expedition photographs, and portraits of celebrities including the 1960’s fashion model, Twiggy and actress Audrey Hepburn.  Though more contemporary in scope, the Bob Thomas Sports Photography collection also holds images of great moments in sports history including Roger Bannister breaking the four-minute mile in 1954, and the so-called ‘Hand of God’ goal scored by Diego Maradona against England during the 1986 World Cup.

Founded by Czech photojournalist Paul Popper in 1934, the Popperfoto collection is one of Europe’s oldest and largest independently-owned image libraries.  Getty will market the Popperfoto material alongside its formidable historical collection, the Hulton Archive.
