The Michael Ochs Archive includes Billie, Marilyn, Frank, Elvis and many others! As the industry awaits official word of the Jupiter acquisition, Getty Images has extended its buying spree. After agreeing to purchase WireImage last week for $200MM, the company announced today that it has acquired The Michael Ochs Archives, considered by most to be the most comprehensive collection of music and entertainment industry figures from the 1940s through the 1990s.  The collection includes approximately 75,000 images covering every pop-cultural icon of the period, including Frank Sinatra, Marilyn Monroe, Elvis Presley, Bruce Springsteen and many more.  Getty has not disclosed the terms of the deal.

The acquisition of The Michael Ochs Archives so soon after the WireImage deal indicated Getty sees significant opportunity in the pop-culture, celebrity and entertainment image business. Getty will provide clients with all rights and clearances services associated with the use of images from the collection. The company plans to have 15,000 images digitized and available on-line by early April and will continue to add the remaining 60,000 more through 2007.

“My goal with the collection has been to share this important piece of pop culture on a large scale while protecting its integrity,” said Michael Ochs. “Getty Images is uniquely equipped to preserve this imagery and make it easily accessible to the world.”
