Solar_panelsThe Fremont California based stock photography company FeaturePics.com has been using solar panels to power it servers as a means of reducing dependence on oil and other carbon based fuels. Featurepics.com is hosted on the Squire Servers in Santa Cruz, CA and a recent power outage on Friday December 8, 2006 underscored the additional benefit of relying on solar power as the site was completely unaffected.

Rolling blackouts have become more and more common within Silicon and Santa Cruz Valley’s during the summer months as well as during excessive changes in weather. The servers utilized by Featurepics.com are powered by the rMeter system designed to deliver a consistent power output during such black-outs as well as to save power when the local energy grid is functioning properly.

“We always were aware of the fact that solar panels are an excellent solutions for generating power to run our servers,” says Elena Orel, FeaturePics.com Tech leader “When we heard the reports of power outage we were particularly grateful to have this peace of mind.”
