Corbis opens photo gallery in Second Life
Corbis has entered the virtual world by creating a gallery for its photo collections in Second Life, an on-line “world” where visitors can engage in a variety of activities via their “avatars” or on-line alter egos. According to a company press release, the Second Life gallery “is focused on creating a community space where those interested in art and photography can view, share and discuss imagery.”
The release goes on to say that the Corbis gallery on Second Life, which will feature images from various Corbis still image collections, as well as Corbis Motion, Corbis Rights Services and its micro-stock site, SnapVillage will not offer the opportunity to license images “at this time.”
According to Stephen Gillett, Corbis’ VP of Technology who is responsible for the Second Life photo gallery, “We didn’t want this to be some big-bang corporate marketing activity, but instead are taking a grassroots approach by focusing on sharing great imagery for the SL community to enjoy. We hope to make our gallery a social gathering place and a cultural landmark within Second Life and foster a lot of discussion about photography in this emerging medium.”
Corbis says Gillett, whose avatar name is Corbis Kamachi, is a well-known and highly respected online MMORPG gamer and guild master.
