celebrity space heating up in Seattle
On Getty’s 1Q07 conference call with analysts, CEO Jonathan Klein said he expects the company’s celebrity photography division, though still relatively small in terms of revenue, to become more important in future quarters. The purchase of WireImage certainly shows Getty plans to make a serious foray into an area it had, up to now, ceded to Corbis. Corbis, for its part, has also made an announcement about the launch of OutlineLive, what it calls “a contemporary and fresh collection of celebrity photography” that will feature more than 35,000 images by the end of the month.
According to a press-release issued by Corbis, the demand for celebrity images has exploded as evidenced by increase of celebrity pages in magazines by 15% annually since 2001. OutlinelIve is meant to meet this growing demand with celebrity portraits and candid images available for editorial use (including online) with no publicist restrictions.
In contrast with the more restricted Outline collection, buyers can access license and download OulineLive images entirely online. “OutlineLive creates an entirely new and innovative middle market offering that is higher in quality than red carpet shots and easier to access than our exclusive flagship Outline celebrity portraiture,” said Gary Shenk, President, Corbis. “OutlineLive is a quality, less restrictive, price-conscious collection that provides our clients with natural, revealing and unexpected celebrity imagery that they can use to enhance their covers, feature stories and online editions.”
In addition to Outline, OutlineLive joins a group of specialist celebrity image brands from the company’s Personalities portfolio, which includes Outline@Home, featuring celebrities and their residences and Corbis Entertainment which offers images of celebrities at red-carpet events, award ceremonies, premiers and fashion-shows and parties.
