Two films with historical stock footage win at BAFTA Awards
The film ‘Atonement’ won for Best Film and ‘This is England’ won in the Best British Film category. Both received awards at the 2008 BAFTA (British Academy of Film and Television Arts) Awards held in London’s Royal Opera House. Both movies feature a selection of news, music and history content sourced from the Granada, ITN, British Pathe and Reuters catalogues, all licensed from the stock footage agency ITN Source.
‘This Is England’ is the latest film from award winning filmmaker Shane Meadows and is loosely based on his personal experience of growing up. Produced by Warp Films (the sister company of Warp Records), ‘This Is England’, features over 13 minutes of stock footage, including footage of Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, the Falklands War and the National Front, and music footage has been carefully edited into the film to provide historical context, bringing to life the political, cultural and social climate of 1980s Britain.
‘Atonement’ is the work of the director/producer team behind ‘Pride & Prejudice’, Joe Wright and Paul Webster. Produced by Working Title, ‘Atonement’ has been adapted from the novel by the same name written by Ian McEwan. The film features several minutes of historical content from the Second World War including Dunkirk and footage of the King George and Queen Elizabeth visiting factories around the country.
In addition to these films, the stock footage archive, ITN Source, has contributed professional video content to a number of recent award winning films including The Last King of Scotland, The Queen, Borat, Sicko and Half Nelson.
