ArtSelect: from cubicle ennui to cubicle envy

ArtSelect wants to add color to the cubicleArtSelect, the A21 division that sells fine art to consumers and sister company to Superstock, hopes to expand the market for its product by offering it as a way to improve the view of cubicle-bound office workers. For many white-collar employees, the lowly cubicle epitomizes a dreary office existence and presents a small-space decorating problem.  Now, in large part using imagery from Superstock, ArtSelect believes it has a solution that not only cheers up one's work space, but in so doing, also improves worker productivity.

According to the company, Research has shown that on-the-job performance and overall well-being appears to be affected by environmental color or view. A 2003 Journal of Environmental Psychology study, published by Nancy J. Stone, found that employees performing high-demand tasks improved their performance by either taking small breaks or having a scenic picture nearby.  “ArtSelect’s new motivational art appeals to the modern aesthetic of the contemporary office environment,” says Robert Reeder, Vice President of Operations and Merchandising for ArtSelect. “The images were selected for their state-of-the-art precision and breathtaking, scenic beauty. These works of art will give any cubicle wall a professional, polished appearance.”

ArtSelect markets the cubicle art mostly through partners in office furniture, clothing, and home décor businesses, who refer to the cubicle dilemma as a “small-space decorating challenge.”  Employers make up the greater share of buyers, the company says.
