The International Library of African Music (ILAM) is a research institution devoted to the study of music and oral arts in Africa, it preserves thousands of historical musical recordings going back to 1929 as well as having a substantial photographic archive. In October and November 2007 Africa Media Online (the parent company to africanpictures.net) sent a digitisation team to the ILAM headquarters on the the Rhodes University campus in Grahamstown, South Africa, to work with the ILAM staff to digitise approximately 10,000 images. The collection included negatives, slides and photographs of various formats and with the cooperation of ILAM staff and Professor Andrew Tracey, the team also captured in-depth metadata associated with the majority of the images.
Africa Media Online has now retouched a selection of approximately 1,000 images making them available at publishing standards on africanpictures.net
