New At ‘View’ - Modern UK Architectural Photo Feature
Architectural photo library View Pictures in the UK have uploaded a new shoot of this year’s RIBA (The Royal Institute of British Architects) Manser Medal for the best new British house awarded to 3a Hampstead Lane, designed by Duggan Morris Architects and photographed by View contributor James Brittain.
The RIBA Manser Medal recognizes exceptional design in one-off houses in the UK over the past twelve months. Located in the London neighborhood of Highgate, 3a Hampstead Lane was originally built in the 1960’s by an architect couple, Douglas Stirling Craig and his wife Margaret, and noted at the time as an important example of British modernist architecture. Duggan Morris was commissioned by the present owners to re-work the house and gardens to bring it up to date for contemporary living.
Overall, the collaborative approach has been simple and sparing - a new steel structure has been introduced allowing a more open interior, while outside the horizontal linearity of the house has been offset with mature trees and a mixture of hard and soft landscaping. The roof has also been repaired and laid with a bed of sedum. The Manser judges noted the architects had ingeniously reconfigured the house to make it both of its time and of the moment.
