2010 Olympic Winter Games in VancouverIn its role as the Photographic Agency to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for the twelfth consecutive games, Getty Images will cover all aspects of the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games (February 12-28).  Getty Images has been the IOC’s Photographic Agency since Calgary’s Winter Games in 1988.

In addition to its chronicling of the Olympic Torch Relay, Getty will deploy a huge team of photographers, editors and assistants in Vancouver to cover the 86 separate events and 2500 athletes competing for medals.  Getty’s team will work around the clock, uploading images within minutes of their capture.  Getty expects to be able to process more than 1000 images daily from its photographers covering the Games to its online customers.  Images will be added directly to the http://www.gettyimages.com/olympics site.

“The photographer’s role at the Olympic Games is to document the awe-inspiring accomplishments of the athletes shaping Olympic history and share those achievements with the world,” said Adrian Murrell, senior vice president of global editorial for Getty Images.  “As digital photography evolves, the time between the shutter snap and the distribution of the image is steadily decreasing.  As recently as 1992, Olympic Games photographers were developing and drying film in hotel rooms—today, those same photographers can transmit digital images to the world within minutes of pushing the shutter.”

Supplementing its work at the Games, Getty Images offers one of the largest collections of Olympic imagery in the world.  Its archive contains images spanning the history of the Olympic Games, from the 1896 Athens Games to Beijing’s Summer Olympics in 2008.  The company’s collection of Olympic Games photography can also be viewed at the Olympic Museum in Lausanne, Switzerland.
