Featured New Artist: Ulla Lohmann

Ulla is based in the German Alps but spends most of her time in tents in the South Pacific near active volcanoes or sharing house with tribal people. After getting her degree in geography and journalism at the University of Mainz in Germany she received a scholarship to James Cook University in Townsville in Australia where she studied Natural Resource Management and Photojournalism.

When her grand dad gave Ulla her first camera at the age of eight she was hooked.  Ever since she was 18 years old she has been traveling the world and photographing to tell some of the amazing stories out there. “I was often fortunate to capture what will be soon extinct rituals and ways of life. To me, photography is a way of immortalizing something forever. It is not only a great tool of sharing stories between the different cultures, but also to create awareness: To the people being photographed that their culture is something unique and rare. And for us, that we can learn lots from the people living close to nature and that we need our nature to survive.” She tries to get as close as possible, weather person, animal or active volcano.

These images here are about a tribe who live with their mummified ancestors and some of my favorite volcano images.  “To me, life and death are closely related. The volcanoes are destructive, yet they without them there wouldn’t be life on earth. The mummies are dead, mummified by their own relatives, but to them, the dead are alive. In their spiritual world, the mummies can now continue to guard the living.”

In the future she will be working as expedition photographer for the BBC in Papua New Guinea and photographing several stories, mainly with National Geographic France. “My personal project is a book about volcanoes and people, but I am still looking for finance. Any ideas are mostly welcome!!”
