Featured New Artist: Stacy Pearsall
Stacy Pearsall is not new to photography, she’s been doing it for 10 years in the Air Force. She has won the NPPA Military Photographer of the Year competition, twice. Perhaps she shouldn’t be put into this feature because she’s been doing it so long at such a high level. The new part of Stacy’s work is that she is transitioning from Department of Defense photojournalism to photographing without the body armor. Here she talks about her life with the soldiers, “For the last ten years, my focus has been on the military. I captured every aspect of their lives. If they were sleeping, eating or working, I took pictures. I didn’t stop. But, the soldiers really opened up to me, which allowed me to just be there and document.”
Based in Charleston, South Caroline, Stacy trained up through the ranks in the Air Force and also went to Syracuse University’s Photojournalism school while in the Air Force. She has also been involved at the Eddie Adams Barnstorm Workshop, which has helped to continue her education. What keeps her interested in the pursuit of great photography is “I really like the idea of showing people something they haven’t seen before. That’s what keeps me doing photojournalism.”
Stacy submitted images from Diyala Province in Iraq taken from January to May 2007. “I had been to Iraq a couple times before, but this time was different. I really felt that I had a connection with the soldiers I was photographing. Each day was a new experience for me, which really opened me up creatively. Since that time, I have been challenging myself to do stories outside of the military genre. I spent the winter documenting the horse culture in my local area of Charleston, South Carolina, and I am currently working on a story centered around the “back-woods” of the South.
More of her work from Iraq is currently being featured in exhibits in Charleston, S.C. and L.A., California. All proceeds from the exhibit prints are being donated to the Wounded Warrior Project.
