Deserted country highway, Arizona © Omni PhotosThe American Society of Picture Professionals (ASPP) has announced the program for its 2008 Educational Conference to be held in Phoenix Arizona from April 24 to 27.  The Hilton Phoenix East/Mesa will serve as the venue for the event.   The Conference will feature experts representing all sides of the picture business – photographers, distributors and art-buyers – covering the pressing issues facing professionals in the industry today.

The conference opens with a presentation by Sarah Botstein and David McMahon, the producers of Ken Burns’ “The War,” in which they will discuss the process behind researching and clearing rights for the still photos and footage used in the documentary about WWII.  Other topics examined on the first day of the Conference include an examination of digital submission guidelines and standards and how best to work within them, application of new technologies on the future use of visual content.  In addition,  Paul Henning will lead a discussion titled “Where is All the Great Stock Photography Going to Come From?” a question raised by the ascension of new business models that bring amateur shooters’ work into direct competition with that of the pros.

Day two begins with a panel discussion on legal issues related to the marketing and licensing of photography, lead by Nancy Wolff, Laura Zeman and Bonnie Beacher, followed by a presentation by marketing consultant Mary Virginia Swanson titled   “Finding Your Audience: Five Points Towards Achieving Your Personal and Professional Goals” about marketing options for selling imagery.  Further discussions about digital standards and new technologies available to image researchers will follow.
