xcavator.net database approaches 6 million images
The image and video search technology company, CogniSign, has created the portal called xcavator.net to show-case its novel visual search technology. By partnering with several micro-stock companies and two rights-managed agencies, xcavator.net has built an image database of over 5.8 million images. The company hopes to have 10 million images on its site within the next few months.
5.4 million of the images now on xcavator.net come from four micro-stock providers: Fotolia, iStockphoto, Lucky Oliver, and 123RF. Close to 500K additional images comes form the rights managed companies Danita Delimont of Seattle and Photovault of San Francisco. The vast quantity of images helps demonstrate how CogniSign’s visual search technology can sift through millions of images in an instant to bring visually matching results to a given reference image.
Users of the portal will usually begin their search with keywords. Once a researcher finds an image that comes close to his or her needs, they can use that image as a reference for a visual search. Unlike most other visual search systems, that simply find colors and shapes similar to those of the reference image, xcavator offers a “trace” tool that allows the user to trace or high-light those particular elements of the reference image that interest them most.
Once the researcher finds the right image, the site simply refers them directly to the supplier. The purchase transaction then takes place on the supplier’s site.
