Science Faction image by Louie Psihoyos wins award
The Western Publishing Association, which honors excellence in publishing West of the Mississippi River, honored an image by photographer Louie Psihoyos with the MAGGIE Award for Best Single Editorial Enhanced Photo in a trade publication. Gary Halpern, publisher of PhotoMedia Magazine in which the image appeared, and Roger Ressmeyer, who digitally enhanced the image for publication, share the award with the photographer.
The winning image depicts a human figure sitting in front of bank of seemingly hundreds of television monitors. Ressmeyer, the CEO of ScienceFaction, who represents the image exclusively used his exceptional Photoshop skills to multiply the number of monitors to completely fill the frame. He also enhanced the drama of the image by placing a glow around the figure at the center of the scene.
"We are honored to be trusted by such a great photographer like Louie Psihoyos”, Ressmeyer said. “With that trust, we are able to really dive in and roll up our sleeves on these images to make them even better, or to offer alternative versions that increase sales. Louie approved this creative variation and is extremely happy with the way it turned out, including the extra royalties that came his way."
Psihoyos created the original image in 1995 for National Geographic using 100 television monitors and then multiple exposures to increase their number in the frame. He titled it “Five Hundred Televisions.” He calls the version enhanced by Ressmeyer ten years later “One Thousand Televisions in the Information Age.” Ressmeyer stresses, however, that his agency carefully records such enhancements, which they only make with the photographers permission. “Science Faction discloses all significant digital modifications in the captions alongside every enlarged image preview. This maintains the collection's high integrity for our many editorial customers ... especially news publishers who must always know whether an image is an illustration rather than a 100% accurate, documentary representation."
