Getty Images hires former U.S. Attorney John McKay as general counsel

Getty appoints former U.S. Attorney John McKay as general counselGetty Images (NYSE: GYI), has announced the appointment of former U.S. Attorney John McKay as senior vice president and general counsel. McKay has made the news in recent months as one of eight fired federal prosecutors at the center of a Justice Department political scandal raising allegations of improper political maneuvering by the Bush administration. McKay had served as the United States Attorney for Western Washington since 2001.

"Over his long and highly distinguished career, John has shown extraordinary leadership and judgment in positions of authority in both government and business. A native of Seattle McKay has served as a litigation partner at the Seattle law firm of Lane Powell Spears Lubersky. From 1989 to 1990, Mr. McKay served as a White House Fellow, where he worked as a Special Assistant to the Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation in Washington, D.C.  Mr. McKay then returned to Seattle and joined the law firm of Cairncross & Hempelmann, later becoming the firm's managing partner. Between 1997 and 2001, Mr. McKay served as the President of the Legal Services Corporation (LSC) in Washington, D.C.  Congress established the LSC in 1974 as a private, non-profit corporation to ensure equal access to justice under the law for all low-income Americans.  Mr. McKay's tenure at LSC was characterized by a bipartisan approach to working with Congress, driven by a deeply held commitment to the principle of equal justice.

Jeff Beyle, Getty Images' current general counsel, is moving into the role of senior vice president, business development for the company. Beyle has served as general counsel since 2000, and will continue to play an important role as a senior member of the management team of the company. "Jeff has been instrumental in negotiating and executing dozens of acquisitions and strategic alliances for Getty Images over the past seven years. This move will allow him to focus his full-time efforts on this critical aspect of our business plan," said Klein.
