Pixsy partnering with stock photo companies to consolidate into a single search
Recently a21/Superstock announced a partnership with Pixsy, an award-winning media search platform, to index Superstock’s entire collection. Today iStockphoto has also announced a similar partnership. With approximately 1.5 million images each iStockphoto and SuperStock account for more than 3 million stock images available on site that was named one of TIME Magazine's 50 Coolest Websites in 2006. Under the terms of the agreement, Pixsy will index thumbnails from iStock and SuperStock and customers can search on Pixsy.com. After finding a desirable image the user will then be able to license the image directly from the contributor’s site.
In addition, Superstock will work with Pixsy to create three unique portals, in the categories of Fine Art, Travel, and Creative/Contemporary imagery. "This is a new revenue stream that has the potential to grow rapidly as the market shifts," says John Ferguson, CEO of a21, Inc. "Pixsy and SuperStock are capitalizing on new ways to attract more customers to view our assets that we believe should ultimately encourage an increased use of our photographic libraries, and as a result build lasting value for contributors, visitors, advertisers, and publishers."
iStock has been selected by Pixsy as one of the company’s top 10 content providers inside PixsyPower (a suite of media search tools and widgets for website publishers of all sizes). This joint partnership will drive traffic to iStockphoto.com and result in additional qualified traffic from the Pixsy Network. “iStock is the leader in affordable stock imagery and offers the most diverse and high quality user-generated stock image collection in the world,” said Garth Johnson, vice president of business development for iStockphoto. “Pixsy reaches a large online population. iStock, as the pioneer in value-priced images, offers a great price point for many of Pixsy’s publishers.”
Recent years have seen many attempts at creating a consolidated search for the stock photo industry including Stockphotofinder (launched in 2004) and others, however, Pixsy seems to be the first major site to combine images from such a diverse selection of contributors focused on reaching not only professionals but also prosumers and consumers with a growing appetite for imagery.

Dear Brent,
Please allow me to make a correction to your post. While Pixsy and other Stockphotofinder allow to find images, it is still very complicated for image buyers to download and license high resolutions, as they have to go to the original site, reenter their name and password and find the image. Compasspix, however, allows an image buyer to do this from one location.
Not just an image crawler like these search engines you mention, Compasspix , a division of CompassMedia uses advanced technology that allows an image buyer to search any number of photo agencies at the same time and download high resolution without ever leaving the site.
And unlike older technology, there is no need for an agency to upload their high resolution to a central server. All this is done by networking their current database.
