Thomson in talks with Reuters about potential acquisition

Thomson in merger talks with ReutersReuters has recently confirmed rumors that it is currently involved in acquisition negotiations with the Canadian Thomson-Group. Reuters is valued at 13 Billion Euros (approx $16.3 billion). In 2006 Reuters turned over of 3.8 Billion Euro in revenue, with an operational profit of 456 Million Euro. The British news agency employs almost 17,000 people – approx. 2400 of which are journalists, photographers and cameramen. Thomson explained: with the acquisition of Reuters the organization will rise to number one and have an edge over the American agency Bloomberg in the data and news business for financial industries. Thomson’s stock value will be over 20 Billion Euro.


The success of the merger depends as per contract on one single share, the so called “Golden Share”, which has the right to Veto, and is in possession of a discretionary trust fund organization, which also has the order to maintain the independence of the worldwide acting news agency.
