Micro-stock site Lucky Oliver introduces new “midstock” pricing option
The managers of micro-stock site Lucky Oliver have attempted to find a middle ground between the low, low micro-stock prices and the higher prices one expects to pay for higher end royalty free imagery. Aptly named “midstock,” the model allows for Lucky Oliver’s best-selling photographers to set their own prices for images of their own choosing. In addition, the midstock images will appear more prominently in search results by way of placement in a highlighted grouping of images called Sideshow.
LuckyOliver photographers with at least 100 downloads have the opportunity to receive Sideshow placement for 25% of their portfolio. When they reach 500 downloads, they're eligible for Sideshow placement for 50% of their entire portfolio. The photographer sets the price, and keeps 50% of whatever the image earns. The Sideshow feature will afford image researchers the opportunity to see, in theory, higher quality images grouped together at the top of the search results.
Brian Zmijewski, Lucky Oliver’s founder, says "The midstock model allows us to be a place where buyers know they can find high-quality, low-cost images, as well as premium-quality images that are still affordable. It also offers photographers the opportunity to name their own price on a percentage of images in their portfolio.”
