Digital Railroad launches Marketplace beta
The online archiving service for professional photographers, DigitalRailroad.net, has launched a service called Marketplace which allows member photographers to contribute images to a single database. The service gives buyers an opportunity to search for images from a variety of Digital Railroad photographers and suppliers through one point of access. The company launched its Marketplace platform with over 1MM images.
According to Evan Nisselson, CEO, the company created Marketplace at the urging of many of its member photographers who wanted Digital Railroad to add a marketing component to its services. It also meets a demand on the part of art-buyers who, until now, had to search the individual collections of Digital Railroad photographers one at a time. "The launch of Marketplace marks an important milestone in the evolution of the professional photography industry, delivering buyers unprecedented access to great photographer and agency images previously unavailable in one online destination. The combination of the Marketplace as an extension to individual archives gives photographers and agencies a seamless marketing opportunity on one online platform," Nisselson said.
The company, which has offices in Los Angeles, Chicago, New York and London, has a growing team of sales reps to handle customer accounts and negotiate license fees. The company takes 20% of each sale it manages through Marketplace. Photographers contribute to the Marketplace archives on a voluntary basis and can continue to sell their images through their own online branded archive. (Photographers keep 100% of sales generated through their own sites.) The company won’t say how many of its approximately 1,000 members have placed images in the Marketplace database, but expects the number of images to grow rapidly now that the service is up and running. Current contributors to Marketplace include the RF supplier, Blend, and RM travel and lifestyle specialist agency, Danita Delimont.
