UPI puts news image archive online with Digital Railroad
After Corbis and, more recently, Getty have taken steps to increase their presence in the press and celebrity photography space, United Press International (UPI) has joined the fray by placing an archive of 300,000 of its news images online at www.upinewspictures.com. The web-site, which uses the Digital Railroad platform, features historical and contemporary images of international events, world political figures, entertainment celebrities and professional sports accumulated by UPI since its inception in 1907. The company will make the rights managed collection available for licensing for editorial uses.
The announcement and launch of the UPI web-site marks another prestigious partnership for technology provider Digital Railroad who also supports the web-sites of the National Press Photographers Association, NBC Universal, the Advertising Photographers of America, The White House News Photographers Association and Blend Images, among others. Evan Nisselson, Digital Railroad CEO said, “UPI Newspictures offers a perfect example of why we develop our technology—to give large and small archives the ability to manage, market and sell their images more easily to photo buyers. We are honored that UPI Newspictures has selected Digital Railroad technology to digitally distribute some of the world’s most important images as it enters its second century of service.”
