David Redfern wins Milt Hinton Award for Excellence in Jazz Photography
The British photographer David Redfern has won the 7th Milt Hinton Award for Excellence in Jazz Photography. The international prize honors photographers or institutions that have rendered outstanding services in the field of jazz photography, whether it be artistic or documentary photography.
Although Redfern, who was born in Ashburn, Derbyshire, in 1936, photographed rock and pop greats such as Jimi Hendrix, the Beatles or the Rolling Stones, his best and most intensive work is in the world of jazz. This is hardly surprising since he has been in and around London’s dimly lit jazz cellars since the early 1960s – his first photos depict scenes from the old Marquee Club, Kenny Ball and Chris Barber. When jazz slowly gained more acceptance, he regularly went to the festivals in Newport, Antibes or Montreux.
There is hardly any photographer who is able to capture the atmosphere of jazz, whether it be on the stage or backstage accompanying musicians on the road, in such intensity as this tall man, who always speaks with a quiet voice. When David Redfern photographs Ben Webster, you can almost hear the blues of Soulville and physically sense the energy of Louis Armstrong, the syncopation of Dizzy Gillespie, blue notes and swing.
In addition to his picture agency Redferns Music Library, the photographer runs a gallery for music images in London’s Bramley Road. Stefan Hartmann, VISUELL
