Getty offers iStockphoto contributors a contract and raises prices
Earlier this week, Gary Shenk, the new President of Corbis, remarked that micro-stock might become the “farm-team” for higher-end stock image licensors. Apparently, he was on the mark. Getty announced today that it will offer Exclusive iStock photographers who have reached the Diamond sales level, or 25,000 total downloads, a contract with Getty for submitting imagery to the company’s higher end (i.e., higher-priced) Photodisc RF collection. The reaction on the part of iStock photographers, as evidenced in photographer chat-rooms and forums has been overwhelmingly positive.
Getty has stated that for now Exclusive Diamond (25,000 downloads) photographers and illustrators will be allowed to upload 5 images per month to Getty through iStock. Later Getty plans to extend a similar offer to Gold (10,000 downloads) Exclusive contributors. At some point in the future Getty may offer iStockphoto contributors the option to sell Rights-Managed images. The iStockphoto contributors will not be subject to the terms of the Lifesize program at Getty where fees are charged to submit work.
In addition, istockphoto has also announced that effective January 4th, 2007 it will introduce an XS (Extra Small) image size (approximately 300 x 400) and increase the pricing of the other image sizes as follows.
XSmall (300 X 400) – 1 Credit - $.96 - $1.20
Small (600 X 800) – 2 Credits - $1.92 - $2.40
Medium (1220 X 1600) – 4 Credits - $3.84 - $4.80
Large (1920 X 2560) – 6 Credits - $5.76 - $7.20
XLarge (2800 X 4200) – 10 Credits - $9.60 - $12.00
XXLarge (3300 X 4900) – 15 Credits - $14.40 - $18.00
