Alamy goes green by reducing greenhouse gas emissions
The UK-based online stock photo company, Alamy, has announced a Greenhouse Gas Reduction Program to reduce the negative impact its business has on the natural environment. The company has focused on two specific areas where it hopes to lessen the greenhouse gas emissions from its growing business activities; air travel and electricity use.
To help offset Alamy's affect on the atmosphere, the company began contributing to Climate Care in 2004. In 2005, it helped fund a project to supply solar powered electric lanterns to low-income families in Kerala, India. Recognizing that much more is needed to make Alamy "carbon neutral," however, it has taken the following additional steps:
- £50,000 (approx. $100,000 USD) 'start-up' funding for greenhouse gas saving projects in Kerala, India where the long term potential for greenhouse gas emissions saving extends beyond the initial investment.
- Further investment in videoconferencing technology to reduce travel between its offices in India and the UK.
- Greenhouse gas emission reduction targets to be included in the objectives of managers where relevant.
- 'Double offsets' - restarting contributions to third party offset organizations.
- Sourcing electricity from renewable sources where possible.
The company has also released figures showing the amount of emissions its business created in 2004 and 2005. The company plans to update the figures as it pursues new and more effective ways of reducing the impact its activities have on the environment.
We plan to update the figures as we pursue new and more effective ways of reducing the impact our activities have on the environment.
