Dreamstime broaches editorial imagery

The Dreamstime Photojournalist On AssignmentThe Romanian-based micro-stock site, Dreamstime, has launched a photojournalism section titled 'In the News' for editorial imagery depicting current events.  Despite the editorial nature of the imagery in the section, however, contributors may not upload images of recognizable persons unless they have model-releases.

According to Serban Enache, President of Dreamstime, 'In the News' offers an opportunity for their photographers to explore new and different territory.  "We conceived of 'In The News' as a creative exercise for our contributors rather than a marketing strategy for the business," Enache says.  The company considered creating a separate license which would allow for use of non-model-release imagery for only editorial purposes.  They decided, however, that this would only confuse the Dreamstime community of image buyers, which consists primarily of people using RF images for low-budget commercial purposes.  Examples of the kinds of images Dreamstime will not accept include crowds of protestors where any person is the crowd can be recognized, or images of recognizable political figures or other celebrities.

The photographs that go on 'In The News' will stay in that section only for as long as the subject they cover remains current.  Then, because they meet the same requirements as the rest of the images on Dreamstime, “they can have a life on the site as a royalty free image,”  Enache says.  He added, however, "Of course, we will monitor the activity closely and might consider setting up a truly editorial-only part of the site where model-releases are not required, some time in the future."
