Getty’s iStockphoto launches foreign language sites
Today, iStockphoto launched three local-language versions of its web-site in Spain, France and Germany. At the same time, iStock’s web-site now offers keyword searching in those three languages plus nine more. iStock has accomplished this by leveraging the proprietary keyword translation methods of its parent company, Getty Images, which purchased the micro-payment business earlier this year.
iStock claims over 1MM members in its photo community and over 1MM images and videos from approximately 23,000 contributing artists. The company sees this move as a stepping stone to reaching an even wider global audience. In addition, contributors whose native language is among the twelve now served by the web-site will have an easier time providing meta-data and uploading their content to the site. “Small and medium businesses can make a Fortune 500 impression with the images and videos that are now available at prices that provide a better value to them,” said David Haueter, principal research analyst with Gartner. “It will be interesting to watch what globalization of this community can do for marketers around the world.”
According to the press-release about the new foreign language sites, “French-, German-, and Spanish-speaking communities make up the largest iStockphoto user populations after English. Each localized site will feature specific content created by members in that region.” The 12 supported languages are: US English, UK English, French, German, Japanese, Spanish, Portuguese, Brazilian Portuguese, Russian, Italian, Polish and Greek.
“We are very excited to welcome a broader set of international clients and contributors to iStockphoto thanks to our elegant new keyword translation, language support, and localized content,” said Bruce Livingstone, CEO of iStockphoto. “We want to the share the explosion of stock imagery and video worldwide, and I can’t wait to meet the amazing new contributors and designers who will join iStockphoto now.”
