Getty launches Rights Ready model with Riser collection
Getty Images has launched the Riser collection with more than 80,000 images, making good on its promise to introduce the new Rights-Ready (RR) licensing model by the end of August 2006. The new model has been modified slightly from the original announcement in response to concerns from photographers. Instead of offering images with an unlimited term they are now offered the nearly-unlimited term of ten years from the date licensed. Each image will be licensed to a single “end-user” which has been defined as a single brand rather than a single (entire) company. If a company would like to re-use an RR image for another brand they would be required to obtain an additional license.
Each license is offered for unlimited use according to the usage categories below. Image buyers, who would like to use a single image for multiple categories (listed below), for example Print ($800) & Web ($550), would be required to obtain a license for each usage category or purchase the All Commercial Uses license for $2250.
The new model has been introduced to offer customers some of the benefits of Rights-Managed (RM) licensing along with the ease of use typically associated with a Royalty-Free (RF) license. Getty is stressing that the new model offers: High Quality images, Broad use categories, Flat-rate pricing, one-click licensing, and a ten year license. Getty had previously offered a similar license option called Flexible License Pack (FLP) where a customer could purchase a Rights-Managed image with a similar category structure designed to be user-friendly however the user was required to define the territory and industry.
