Getty Images to launch Rights-Ready licensing model

As foreshadowed by Jonathan Klein in Getty's 2nd quarter conference call, Getty Images has announced it will offer its clients a new licensing option that “makes licensing fast, flexible and predictable while delivering a level of rights control that limits the possibility of over-exposure in the marketplace," according to Robert Gubas, Getty’s vice president of product marketing.  The new model called “rights-ready,” will apply only to images from a specific brand, also new, called “Riser” which will launch later this month with approximately 80,000 images.

As stated in an August 2nd press-release,  “Under the rights-ready model, duration and territory rights are unlimited and use parameters are broadly defined, so customers can avoid re-licensing for creative campaigns that have the potential to evolve over time. Further streamlining the process, eight fixed price points are designated according to basic commercial, internal company, and editorial use categories, at levels comparable to corresponding rights-managed single use categories.”

The press release does not reveal the terms of the “eight fixed price points,” and it seems that Getty is still working out the balancing act between offering an easy-to-use license at a price point that is comparable with the average RM license. The press release also does not divulge the source of the images in the new "Riser" collection and whether the images are wholly-owned by Getty or have come from contributors.

The new Rights Ready (RR) model will be available in late August 2006 and will be offered along with the other licensing models currently offered by Getty Images including, rights-managed (RM), royalty-free (RF) subscription, and micro-payment
