Alamy releases quarterly figures

Alamy has released detailed information about the numbers of images added to its collection, the percentage break-downs between RF and RM revenue and images sold, and the average pricing information for the two licensing models.  The company made public figures from the first half of 2004 to the first quarter of 2006.  In several cases the numbers reveal surprising trends, at least for Alamy, if not for the industry in general.  Highlights of these numbers include the following:

The company has added record numbers of images from both photographers and agencies in the first quarter of ’06. Having added an average of 270,000 images in the first two quarters of 2004, it added 825,000 in the first quarter of this year.

About 70% of the 825,000 images added in 1Q06 were RM and 30% RF.

In the first half of 2004, 53% of the company’s revenue came from RM licensing, while 47% came from RF.  By the most recent quarter, RM had increased to 60% and RF dropped to 40%.

In terms of the number of images licensed, RF accounted for 53% and RM 47% two years ago while in 1Q06 those percentages have dramatically reversed to where RF accounts for only 33% of the images licensed and RM accounts for 67%.

Alamy’s average price per image for both licensing models was the most interesting:  Over the period covered, prices for RF have grown steadily and, in 1Q06, actually exceeded those of RM by 30%.  The results show RM pricing uneven or declining, as follows:
